儒學의 敎育傳統과 現代的 意味

The modernized meaning of educational tradition in confucianism; educational course and value of golden means

본 연구는 유학에서 강조하는 교육의 맥락과 소학-대학이라는 교육의 단계를 고찰하는 작업이다. 유학은 공자와 맹자, 주자라는 지적 거장을 거쳐 다양하게 발전 해왔다. 특히 조선조 성리학은 그 절정을 이루었다. 이들의 사유는 철저히 인간을 중심에 두고 자연과 관계 조절을 해 나갔고, 인간의 도덕․윤리 의식과 사회 질서 유지를 교육을 통해 보완하려고 노력하였다. 그 교육의 핵심에 자기 수양이라는 수기론(修己論)이 자리한다. 수기론은 크게 ‘소학’과 ‘대학’으로 분류되는데, 현대적 의미로 이해하면 아동 교육과 성인 교육에 해당한다. 본고는 몸의 다스림을 중핵(中核)으로 하는 유학교육론의 맥락을 검토하고 현대적 의미를 찾아보았다. 특히 소학에서 대학으로 연결되는 교육의 과정과 중용(中庸)의 세계관 속에서 수기교육의 특징을 도출하였다. 요컨대 전통 교육은 날마다 이 세계에 던져지는 자기의 몸을 어떻게 조절하느냐에 일차적인 관심을 둔다. 교육이 현실 삶을 제대로 읽어내고 그에 복무해야 한다는 측면에서 전통 교육, 즉 수기론은 현대 생활을 지속하는 우리들에게 자기 조절은 물론 구성원의 상호 이익과 복지를 촉진시키는 사회 건설의 바탕이 될 수 있다.

This study is a work of investigating the educational meaning of Sugi(修己) which is emphasized in confucianism. Confucianism has been developed through 공자 and 맹자 who is thought of as the great scholars. Especially Chosun neo-confucianism was at the apogee of its history of thoughts. The way of their thoughts made a thorough investigation in a sense that they gave emphasis on human being in the organic relation to nature and made up for educational needs in the consideration of ethics and social order. Sugi(修己) puts in place at the center of this way of investigation. Sugi(修己) is broadly divided into ‘Sohak(小學)’ and ‘Daehak(大學)’ can be simplified to pedagogy and andragogy. This paper makes an effort to find out the modernized meaning of its old, but valuable Sugi(修己) education as the self-control of body in terms of genuine confucianism. Especially Sugi(修己) education comes up with educational process from ‘Sohak(小學)’ to ‘Daehak(大學)’ and the world view of golden means. Namely, traditional education puts the priority to the education of how to self-control his body which is cast in the world of daily life. Education should be useful to deeply understand the meaning of personal and daily life. In this regard, Sugi(修己) theory can be the basics to build a meaningful community based on mutual interests and welfare.
