고르기아스의 철학과 교육적 함의

Gorgias’ Philosophy and its Educational Implications

고르기아스의 지적 업적은 다른 소피스트들에 비해 정당한 평가를 내리기가 어렵다. 먼저 고르기아스가 소피스트인가 하는 문제가 있으며, 이보다도 더 어려운 사정은 고르기아스를 소피스트로 묘사한 플라톤의 시각이 고르기아스 연구를 지배해 왔다는 것이다. 근본적으로 플라톤은 고르기아스를 비판하는 입장에 서 있었으므로 플라톤의 시각을 통해 고르기아스를 정당하게 평가하는 것은 불가능하다. 이 논문은 고르기아스 본연의 전체적인 사상을 그려내고자 한다. 특히 그의 변론가로서의 직업활동의 전제가 된 「철학」을 살펴보고 거기서 그의 교육사상을 추출하고자 한다. 이 논문의 집필에 있어 필자는 플라톤, 아리스토텔레스의 고르기아스에 관한 증언뿐만 아니라 고르기아스의 현존하는 전 작품을 동원해 플라톤의 시각을 통하지 않은 고르기아스의 모습과 목소리를 재현해 보고자 한다.

A fair evaluation of Gorgias' intellectual achievements is more difficult than in the case of other sophists. First, there is the question whether Gorgias is a sophist or not; second, the answer to the question depends on how we define a sophist. The fact that Plato's depiction of Gorgias as a sophist has dominated researches on Gorgias makes it hard to evaluate Gorgias fairly. Basically, Plato is critical of sophists; therefore, his view of Gorgias is hardly balanced. In this paper, I intend to examine the configuration of the historical Gorgias' thoughts in general; his view of philosophy and its educational implications supporting his professional activity as a rhetorician in particular. In an age when Plato's essentialist world-view is being doubted, Gorgias' teaching could offer fresh clues to solving a wide variety of social problems in politics, education, communication, etc. In this paper, I attempt to reconstruct the real voice of Gorgias unfiltered through Plato's views.
