시각지능이론의 연구동향과 교육적 의미 탐색

An Exploratory Study of the Research Trends and the Educational Meaning of Visual Intelligence Theory

본 연구에서는 다양한 시각 정보와 미디어들이 지배하는 시대에 우리의 사고를 향상시킬 수 있는 방안으로서 등장하게 된 ‘시각지능이론’의 연구동향을 정리하고 그 교육적 의미를 찾고자 하였다. 그 결과, 연구동향은 지능과 시각지능에 대한 기존연구와 최근 새롭게 등장하고 있는 시각지능이론의 체계화 과정, 그리고 이론의 도전과 미래 방향성으로 정리할 수 있었다. 시각지능이론의 교육적 의미는 ‘언어, 사고, 시각지능’의 관계의 관점, 학습자 사고 이해관점, 시각지능이론의 차원에 따른 교육적 활용 가능성 관점의 세 가지로 나타낼 수 있다. 이를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시각지능은 ‘언어와 사고’에서 ‘언어, 사고, 시각지능’의 관계로 관점을 전환함으로써 언어 외에 영역에 대한 지적 능력에 대한 교육적 필요성과 가능성을 인식해야 한다. 둘째, 학습자의 사고과정을 이해하기 위한 새로운 영역의 인지구조로서 ‘시각적 심층구조(Visual Deep Structure)’의 교육적 도입 필요성을 제안하였다. 이 개념의 도입은 학습자의 사고 과정에 대한 이해와 교육적 활동을 위한 이론적 도구로서의 의미를 가진다. 셋째, 시각지능이론의 ‘해석’, ‘조작’, ‘창조’적 차원의 교육적 적용과 실천 방향을 탐색해 보았다. 구체적 방향으로 시각적 표현 활동, 시각적 이해활동, 비유를 통한 시각화, 과정에 대한 시각화, 자성적 예언을 통한 시각화, 환타지의 활용, 무의식의 의식적 시각화 등이 제안되었다.

The purpose of this study was to explore visual intelligence theory through the review and discussion of research trends related to intelligence. This process gave us an overview of the current state of 'visual intelligence theory' related studies, and allowed us to explore both the challenge and the direction of this theory. We also explored the educational meaning of visual intelligence theory. Findings were as follows: First, visual intellectual capacity had experienced increasing educational interest by changing the viewpoint from 'language vs thinking' to 'language vs thinking vs visual intelligence'. Second, visual intelligence gave birth to a new concept in cognitive structures: 'Visual-Deep Structure' for comprehending learners' thinking processes. Third, with our findings, we proposed three view points for educational use of the dimension of visual intelligence theory: (a) interpretation dimension: recall & visualization strategy enhances visual power (b) operation dimension: interaction between visual deep structure & visual surface structure (c) creation dimension: creative thinking with future vision, visual fantasy, and dreaming.
