듀이의 인간주의 종교철학이한국의 학교교육에 주는 시사점

John Dewey's religious humanism and its suggestions on Korean education

듀이는 현대의 과학의 발달에 따라 초자연적인 신과 그것에 근거한 종교는 설자리를 잃었다고 보았다. 그러나 강한 열망과 헌신을 내포하는 종교적 경험은 사회 변화를 위한 강력한 추진력을 가지므로 그 기능을 사회의 발전에 활용하고자 하였다. 듀이는 사회나 국가에 통합된 이상을 공동의 신앙으로 설정하고, 그것의 실현을 종교적 태도로 추구할 것을 제안하였다. 여기에서 종교적 경험의 가치는 사회의 통합된 신념이 지성적, 과학적 방법과 민주적인 방법으로 형성되었는가에 의해 결정된다. 그런데 한국교육은 과학적 탐구능력과 민주적 대화의 능력을 길러주지 못했기 때문에 사회적 혼란을 경험하고 있다. 그러므로 학교는 종교적 교육을 통해 학생들에게 과학적 탐구능력을 길러주고, 대화와 토론의 민주적인 방법을 습득시켜야 한다.

Development of science has required new conceptions and practices in religion. Religion has a significant meaning for education because it has an influence on cultivating human nature and developing characteristics of a society. This thesis aims to analyze John Dewey's philosophy of humanistic religion and to find out suggestions on Korean schooling. Dewey asserted that there is no place for the supernatural Being and religion based on it in these days. But he intended to take the advantage of the function of religious experiences in life because they include intense allegiance and devotion which is actuated and supported by ideal ends so inclusive that they unify the self. Dewey suggested that we should establish a unified shared ideal as a common faith in a society or a nation, and that we should endeavor to realize it with religious attitude. Then the value of religious experience depends on the method how the unified social ideal is established. The methods he recommended are social intelligence, which means scientific inquiry into the social problems, and democracy, which means more varied points of shared common interests and freer interaction between social groups. Social conflicts and struggles are taking place in Korea because Koreans had not learned the method of intelligent inquiry and the way of democratic dialogue in school. Therefore schools in Korea have to endeavor to teach students the method of scientific inquiry and the democratic way of dialogue.
