본 연구는 John Holt의 ‘행함(doing)’의 개념과 자원들에 대해 고찰해 보았다. Holt는 교육이라는 용어보다 ‘행함’이라는 용어를 지지하였다. ‘행함’은 ‘행위자(do-er)’들이 스스로 자신의 삶의 방향을 정하여 삶의 목적이 뚜렷하고 의미 있게 살아가고 일하는 것을 의미한다. ‘행함’을 위한 자원들은 프리스쿨, 교환학습, 도서관, 상업적 출판물 등이 있다. 프리스쿨은 나이를 초월해서 모든 이들과 손잡고 사람이든 물질이든 지역공동체의 자원을 활용하기 위해 설립되었다. 교환학습은 자기가 하고 싶은 일을, 하고 싶은 곳에서, 하고 싶을 때, 좋아하는 사람들과 함께 하는 방법으로서, 좋아하는 사람들과 계속 만나고 싶다는 마음을 풀 수 있는 방법이다. 도서관은 책이나 기록물을 보관할 뿐만 아니라 다양한 시청각 교재를 수집, 보관하여 사람들에게 대여 해 줌으로 사람들의 아이디어를 증진시키는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 자원이다. 상업적 출판물은 집필자와 독자들의 생각들을 상호 교환하여 상호 영향을 주어 도움을 줄 수 있는 정보들이 실려 있다. 서로의 정보를 교환하는 정보교환 네트워크도 ‘행함’을 위한 자원이다. 이러한 자원들은 사람들에게 자신의 삶을 적극적이고 흥미롭게 살아가도록 도와주는 중요한 사회자원이다. Holt의 ‘행함’은 교육에 대한 새로운 개념을 제시했을 뿐만 아니라 교육의 장을 학교 밖으로 확장했다는 공헌점을 찾을 수 있다. Holt의 ‘행함’이 교육현장에 주는 시사점은 교육과 배움에 대한 근본적인 물음을 제기하였다는 점이다.

This paper tried to investigate about the concept and resources of John Holt’s ‘doing’. Holt favored to the term of ‘doing’ against ‘education’. Doing means that ‘do_er’ directs its own life and works with a definite purpose and meaning. Resources for ‘doing’ are the free school, the learning exchanges, the libraries and the commercial publication. The free school founded for all ages to use the resources of community. The learning exchange is a way to serve a demand for things what you want, at where you want, at when you want, for as long as you want, with people you like. The libraries were the place to store books and other written records as well as all kinds of audio_visual materials. The library can and should help increase the commerce in ideas. The commercial publications contains the informations which exchange ideas and affect each other between the writer and the reader. An information exchange network is also the resources for doing. These resources are the important social resources which assist people to live oneself interestingly and actively. Holt's ‘doing’ contribute to the education field as follow: First, Holt's ‘doing’ suggested new concepts about education. Second, Holt’s ‘doing’ expanded the education field which is at the school to the outside of the school.
