A Study on the Nature of Space-Time

시공간의 본질은 실체론과 관계론 간의 논쟁을 중심으로 논의되어 왔다 실체론자들은 시공간의 부분들이 물질과 동일하지는 않더라도 그와 유사한 존재론적 위상을 가진 실체로 이해하고 있는데 비해서, 관계론자들은 시공간의 독립적인 실체성을 부정하고 시공간이 물질들 사이의 관계로 환원될 수 있다고 주장한다 이 논문은 최근 비상대론적 고전역학의 문맥에서 논의된 공간의 존재론에 대한 실체론과 관계론 간의 논쟁에서 다음 두가지 측면을 부각시키고자 한다 첫째, 실체론과 관계론이라는 ‘형이상학논쟁’이 ‘물리학’(역학이론)의 발전에서 어떤 역할을 하고 있는지를 명확히 할 것이다 둘째, 뉴턴 시공간에 대한 실체론 해석에 대한 비판으로 최근 제안된 프리드만과 바버-버토티의 관계론 해석들이 실체론을 대체하기에는 역부족임을 논의할 것이다 이 논이를 통해서 실체론 그리고 관계론이라는 시공간 존재에 대한 형이상학적 논쟁과 물리학 간의 연관성을 명확하게 이해할 수 있을 것이다

The ontological status of space-time had been traditionally debated under the name of substantivalism-relationism controversy The debates between two parties are concerned with the nature of existence of parts of space-time Substantivalism claims that the points of space-time have existence analogous to that of material substance Relationists argue that space-time should be understood as the framework of possible spatiotemporal relations between bodies In this essay, I attempt to show that these metaphysical debates play important roles on the development of physical theories I also point out that recent space-time relationism suggested by Friedman and Barbour-Bertotti does not succeed in providing full-pledged relationist interpretations of non-relativistic classical mechanics In this course, I emphasize the relationship between ontology within space-time physics and one within traditional philosophy Although substance-relation debate appears to be metaphysical, it turns out that the question of the ontological status of space is closely connected with the construction of physical theories
