This study aims to examine the effects that teaching English through situation drama has on the speaking ability of 5th grade students in elementary school The subjects were two classes, containing a total of sixty-four students at an elementary school in a city in Gyeong-gi province The experimental group learned and practised speaking activities based on situation dramas while the control group did so in accordance with the English skills, the questionnaires on the emotional domain, the teacher's instructional journals, and the students' learning diaries were obtained for analysis The results were as follows the experimental group significantly improved in English speaking ability as compared to the control group As for the emotional domain, the experimental group was also notably higher than the control group in terms of their interest and motivation for learning English, their self-confidence in using English, and their self-directed learning attitude Additionally, the formation of heterogeneous groups in respect to learning ability when conducting situation drama activities enabled all students, regardless of level to have positive results The research results indicate that speaking activities based on situation drama can be understood to show several positive effects on the development of students' English speaking ability and their emotional domain
