초등영어 학습자의 정보처리 단위의 크기와 영어능력의 상관관계 분석

The correlation between the information unit size and English communication proficiency of elementary school students

This study was intended to investigate the correlation between the information unit size in the language process, the speaking speed, the STM capacity and the English communicative proficiency of elementary school students In this study, 62 elementary 6™ graders were tested as subjects This study consists of three stages Stage one was to test the STM capacity of the subjects Stage two measured the information unit size in the language process and the speaking speed Stage three tested the students' English communication proficiency which consisted of speaking and listening skill After these three stages, the correlations of the parameters were examined using SPSS 12⁺ window package The results of this study were as follows First, if the size of the unit of information process was increased by chunking, the speaking speed and the STM capacity for English were increased Second, the communicative proficiency was increased as the information unit size increased The implication from this study for the elementary English teaching process could be briefly noted as follows, (1) The main focus of elementary English teaching should be always on the sentence or thought group level, and the word level teaching is advised to be designed as supplementary to the main focus, (2) As a way of increasing the information unit size, chants, song, games or dramas would be a good choice to give a situation for chunking information in a meaningful context
