English activity workbooks, which were first introduced to the revised 7th English National Curriculum to support level-differentiated instruction, supplement English textbooks, and promote students' self-directed learning, are being used along with English textbooks in secondary schools The purpose of this study is to investigate how students and teachers perceive and use English activity workbooks To this end, a survey was conducted to 937 middle and high school first-year students and 44 teachers who teach English to middle and high school first-year students The major findings of the survey are as follows Compared to students, teachers were more positive about the usefulness of English activity workbooks This recognition tendency was also found in the survey items dealing with the convenience of using English activity workbooks Lastly, students and teachers point out several problems concerning current English activity workbooks such as no difference between English activity workbooks and their corresponding textbooks, lack of materials to elicit students' interest, and etc
