Political Analysis on Beijing Olympics : National Construction and Sports Events in China

스포츠 이벤트의 중요성은 20세기 들어 더욱 확연해졌다. 특히 올림픽 같은 대형 스포츠 이벤트들은 사회문화적 영향력뿐 아니라 정치 경제적으로 다양한 의미를 제공했다. 동아시아 개발도상국들의 올림픽 개최는 경제적 이익창출과 국가발전 혹은 재도약의 기회로 활용되기도 했다. 그러나 이러한 역사적 사실에도 불구하고 개별 국가들이 스포츠 이벤트를 국가건설 과정에서 어떻게 활용했는지에 대한 이해는 상대적으로 부족했다. 이 글은 중국을 사례로 스포츠 이벤트가 어떻게 정치적으로 활용되어 왔으며, 동시에 중국의 대표적 스포츠 이벤트인 베이징 올림픽이 국가의 정치적 도구 혹은 수단으로 어느 정도의 효과를 발휘했는지에 대한 분석을 시도했다.

It is no doubt that sports events became important in the 20th century. Especially, Mega－sport－events, such as Olympic games, do not only have a great influence on a society as well as culture, but also reflect various meanings on a country s politics and its economy. Developing counties in East Asia, with the help of holding Olympic Games, both acquired more economic profits and the chance of great national development. In spite of these aspects, we have no sufficient understanding of how each single nation have applied sports events to national constructions. Taking China as an example, this article analyzes how the country made use of sports events politically, and also tries to analyze as a political tool or method, to what extent, Beijing Olympics exerted its function.
