Since ancient times, the aesthetic consciousness of the human body has been expressed in the form of make-up and clothing and varied with the concept of beauty selected by the priority order of geographic conditions, religion, and culture of each period. Above all, ancient times have important historical significance since it is widely accepted that it is the origin of beauty and make-up and the origin of Western fashion. Thus it is considered that a study on the make-up and clothing of ancient times is very significant in investigating the aesthetic consciousness of the human body in the early stage of the dawn of civilization. The purpose of this study is to provide objective basic materials of beauty make-up by examining the make-up and clothing in ancient times associated with the aesthetic consciousbness of the human body systematically. For detailed study, the background of the times and aesthetic, cultural, and artistic backgrounds were investigated and the make-up and clothing of ancient times were considered by the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods. For study methods, previous researches and related books were reviewed Furthermore, abstracted make-up and clothing photo materials were organized by tables to understand and compare the changes of times more easily.
