The cell growth inhibitory effect of n-6 unsaturated fatty acids on the growth of normal cell lines and cancer cell lines was evaluated by the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-phenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 2,3-bis-2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolium-5-caboxanilide (XTT) methods Linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA) on cancer cell lines decreased the cell viability and cell adhesion which was shown by the colorimetric method. The light microscopy of human skin melanoma cells showed that LA made severe morphological changes and decreased the number of cells in the concentration-dependent manner. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of AA was higher than that of LA. These results suggest that LA has a potential anticancer activity.
