Many kinds of work zone traffic control techniques using lane closures for upstream of work zones were provided and evaluated by many simulation runs varying traffic volume, work duration and the length of the closed lane. By the results, the technique gradually reducing the number of closed lanes from work zone was the most effective to the safe and efficient flow of traffic approaching and traveling through work zones. The congestion of work zone largely increased as the work duration does when the traffic volume exceeded the capacity of work zone. It is important to minimize congestion impacts by working when the traffic volume is less than the capacity of the work zone based on traffic volumes from a typical day. Otherwise, work duration needs to be minimized. The longer the length of the closed lane, the larger the effect of the control. For the purpose of the work zone traffic control is to minimize traffic disruption and eliminate safety hazards involved with work zones, it would be important to maintain the through-puts consistently and make speed stable for the section.
