연구자의 젠더 이분법이 연구자의 위치에 대한 질문으로 돌아오다

The Conscious and Unconscious Gender Dichotomy Comes Back as a Question of Researchers' Position : “I cannot participate in the interview. Because I am not a ‘man’....”

이 글은 2009년 1학기 이화여자대학교 대학원 여성학과에서 개설된 『여성학 연구 방법』에서 김보화와 지승경이 제출한 “고학력 남성의 페미니스트 정체성 형성 과정에 관한 연구”의 연구 후기이다. 실제 연구 현장에서 ‘여성주의 연구 방법론’은 연구자 개개인의 의식과 충돌했다. 그 과정에서 연구자들에게는 성찰이 요구될 수밖에 없었고, 연구 참여자를 분석하기에 앞서 연구자 스스로를 분석하게 되었다. 이 글은 “고학력 남성의 페미니스트 정체성 형성 과정에 관한 연구”를 시작하게 된 동기와 연구자들이 가지고 있던 젠더 이분법이 한계에 부딪히는 지점을 기록했다. 그리고 ‘연구자의 윤리’에 대한 개념을 찾아가는 과정과 공동 연구 과정이 연구자들을 ‘임파워(empowerment)’하는 기제가 됨을 서술했다. 결론적으로 ‘여성주의 연구 방법론’에 입각한 연구는 연구자들의 이분법적 전제를 사유하게 하였으며, ‘차이’에 대한 ‘성찰’을 수반하게 했다.

This article is an authors' postscript of the team project, “The Process of Forming the Identities of Educated Male Feminists” presented at the class of <Feminist Methodology> in spring, 2009. Through the research process for the project, the authors experienced conflicts between the theories of feminist methodology and the actual interview practice, the conflicts challenging our dichotomous notion of “gender”. The gaps between the theories and practices required us the reflexivity, an analysis on ourselves as researchers before analyzing the research participants. This article includes an analysis on personal motives of why each of us come to choose “educated men feminist” as a work subject and reflections on our encounter with the dichotomus notion of gender as feminist researchers. The efforts to deal with troubles of 'Ethical Issues in Research' and enhanced cooperation between us paved the way of empowerment. In conclusion, the theories of feminist methodology guided us in examining the logic of dichotomy we had been hold. This article shows that the process of research accompanied by reflexivity of differences between participants and two researches as well.
