스웨덴 한림원(왕립과학아카데미)과 노벨 위원회가 1901년부터 해마다 수여하는 노벨상 중에서도 노벨 문학상은 여러모로 중요하고 독특한 위치를 차지한다.그 첫 번째 이유는 노벨 문학상이 다른 분야의 노벨상과는 달리 인간의 정신적 측면에 대한 상이기 때문이고,두 번째 이유는 문학 작품에 대한 평가란 다분히 주관적이고 상대적일 수밖에 없기 때문이다.노벨상을 처음 창시한 알프레드 노벨의 유언장에 따르면 노벨 문학상은 “이상적인 방향에서 가장 뛰어난 작품으로 인류에게 큰 공헌”을 한 작가에게 수상하도록 되어 있다.그러나 이 구절을 어떻게 해석하느냐에 따라 그 의미가 사뭇 달라진다.지금까지 노벨 문학상의 역사는 바로 이 “이상적인 경향”을 어떻게 받아들여 왔느냐 하는 해석의 역사라고 할 수 있다.이러한 선정 기준뿐만 아니라 노벨 문학상은 또 다른 점에서도 다른 노벨상과는 적잖이 차이가 난다.가령 다른 상과는 달라서 좀처럼 한 사람 이상에게 공동으로 상을 수여하지 않는다.또한 노벨 문학상은 ‘문학’의 범주도 무척 넓어서 단순히 순수문학 장르에 속하는 문학가뿐만 아니라 역사가나 철학자에게도 상을 수여해 왔다.지금까지 노벨 문학상은 선정 기준이 이중적이었고,주로 유럽 작가들에게 상을 주었으며,대중문학이나 아동문학 등의 장르에 전혀 관심을 기울이지 않았다는 점에서도 문제가 없지 않다.한마디로 노벨 문학상은 다른 문학상과 비교해 볼 때 문화 정치학의 영향을 가장 많이 받고 있는 상이라고 할 수 있다.
Descriptive rather than analytic in its approach, this article attempts to examine some aspects of cultural politics regarding the nominations and selections of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature. It argues that the Nobel Committee and the Swedish Academy have exerted an enormous powers in the field of the politics of culture in the name of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Awarded annually since 1901 to an author form any country who has, in the words from the will of Alfred Nobel, produced` in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction,` the prize has attracted serious criticism in recent years for a variety of reasons. Among some reasons for criticism are the fact that the Nobel Committee, together with the Swedish Academy, has interpreted the intent of the will either too strictly or too loosely. This article further argues that controversies about Nobel Laureate selections are diverse: 1) the selections of the winners have been more often than not politically motivated; 2) the Nobel Committee has been not a little biased as Eurocentric, and 3) the Committee has not adequately recognized such literary genres as literary genres which have been classified as popular literature and children`s literature, thus paying too much attention to the so-called “pure” literary genres.
