이 논문은 정지용의 대표적인 작품 가운데 하나인 ｢향수｣가 과연 19세기 말엽에서 20세기 초엽에 걸쳐 활약한 미국 시인 트럼불 스티크니(TrumbullStickney)의 작품 ｢므네모시네(Mnemosyne)｣를 모방하거나 표절한 작품인가 하는 점을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다.지금까지 몇몇 비평가들은 정지용이 ｢향수｣에서 구사한 몇몇 시어를 증거로 들어 모방이나 표절한 작품이라고 주장해 왔다.물론 정지용이 스티크니의 ｢므네모시네｣를 읽고 시적 영감을 받고 몇몇 시어를 빌려온 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이다.그러나 정지용은 놀라운 시적 변용을 통하여 스티크니의 작품을 토속적이고 향토적인 전혀 새로운 작품으로 창작해 내었다.정지용은 스티크니의 작품에서 몇몇 시어를 빌려오되 그것을 전혀 다른 맥락에서 사용함으로써 독창적 작품으로 승화시키는 데 성공을 거두었다.또한 정지용은 ｢향수｣를 창작하면서 ｢강이 계곡을 따라 구불구불 지나가는 소리가 들리네｣같은 스티크니의 다른 작품에서도 시적 영감을 얻을 뿐만 아니라,더 나아가 헨리 롱펠로(HenryLongfellow)같은 다른 미국 시인의 ｢화살과 노래｣한테서도 시적 영감을 얻었다.무엇보다도 주제에서 볼 때도 정지용의 ｢향수｣와 스티크니의 ｢므네모시네｣는 큰 차이가 난다.스티크니가 고향 상실의 주제를 다루는 반면,정지용은 이 작품의 제목에 걸맞게 고향에 대한 애틋한 그리움을 표현한다.식민주의 시대를 살고 있는 지식인이요 시인인 정지용에게 고향은 모성과 같은 아주 각별한 의미를 지니고 있었다.스티크니의 작품이 실낙원을 다룬다면 정지용의 작품은 복낙원을 다룬다. 결론적으로 정지용의 ｢향수｣는 스티크니의 작품을 모작한 것이거나 표절한 것이 결코 아니라 정지용의 시적 재능을 엿볼 수 있는 아주 독창적인 작품이다.
This article makes a comparative study ofone of Chi-yong Chong’s representative poems,“Nostagia” (1927),and an American poem,“Mnemosyne” (1902),written by Trumbull Stickney,the scholar-poet who was known mostly in his academic achievements during his life time.On the assumption that Chong had read Stickney’s poem before he wrote“Nostalgia,”it has been argued that the Korean poet was to some extant indebted to the American poet for some poetic diction.In writing“Nostalgia,”Chong makes use of some poetic words like“blew,”“yellow cattle,”“browsed,”“sister,”“perished ember,”and soon. This article maintains, however, that the comparison shoulds top there and go no further than that.Chong’s task of poetic transformation in this particular poem is to metamorphose the theme of not-belonging and atragic sense of life in Stickney’s poem in to some positive meanings that can provide the poetic speaker with a sense of being rooted in his native place.The article further argues that Chi-yong Chong,in poetic structure and symbolic images as well as in themes, went far beyond the original poem, creating a new,and much better,poem.In addition,Chong’s poem has some inter textual relationships not only with Stickney’s other poem like“I Hear a River thro’the Valley Wander,”but also with Henry Wadsworth Long fellow’s“The Arrow and the Song.”In conclusion,Chong’s“Nostagia”is neither a mere imitation nor a plagiarism, as some critics have so far wrongly argued, but a totally different poem from Stickney’s poem and an original work of art.
