Basic electrical energy consumptions are estimated with 3 different processes for municipal sewage plants to find out the potentialities to reduce the energy requirements of the existing plants in Korea. The estimated are very much comparable to the consumptions of EU communities, and the reported Korean consumptions are about 3 times higher than the EU. The higher consumptions are probably due to its low strength of sewage, stringent effluent regulation with instant maximum concentration, low electric rate, higher energy consumption for influent pumping, and lack of CHP system applied. To reduce the energy cost, it can be suggested the above barriers need to be removed. In addition, centralized larger sludge treatment plants for smaller plants or co-digestion with other organic wastes can be proposed, since the anaerobic digester with the CHP system can significantly reduce the electrical energy consumption in sewage plant.
