육당(六堂) 최남선(崔南善)이 근대 계몽기에 이룩한 업적이 한두 가지가 아니지만 종합잡지《소년》과《청춘》을 창간하고 그 잡지를 통하여 서양 문학 작품을 집중적으로 번역하여 소개하였다는 것도 아주 중요한 업적이다. 19세기 말엽부터 한국에서는 서양의 여러 나라에 대하여 알고 싶은 욕구에서 주로 서양의 역사서와 지리서를 번역하여 출간하기 시작하였다. 또한 서구 열강의 위협을 받고 있던 이 무렵 건국 영웅이나 나라를 위기에서 구한 호걸에 관한 외국 문헌을 번역하기도 하였다. 그러나 20세기 초엽 최남선은 소설과 시 그리고 수필 등 외국 문학 작품을 집중적으로 번역함으로써 이 무렵 번역에 새로운 방향을 제시하였다. 그의 외국 문학 작품 번역은 좁게는 한국 근대 문학, 넓게는 신문화가 성장하는 데 굳건한 토대가 되었음은 두말할 나위가 없다. 최남선은 비단 영미 문화권에 속한 작품뿐만 아니라 프랑스·독일·스페인·러시아 등 유럽 문학 작품도 폭넓게 번역하여 소개하였다. 그러나 최남선은 서구어 구사력이 부족한 탓에 주로 일본어 번역본을 저본으로 삼아 중역하였다. 그의 일본어 중역은 번안, 초역, 경개역 등의 형태로 이루어졌다. 최남선의 번역 작업은 그의 창작 활동에서도 적잖이 영향을 끼쳐 흔히 신체시의 효시로 일컫는 ｢해에게서 소년에게｣와 창가 ｢경부철도가｣는 조지 바이런과 앨프리드 테니슨의 작품에서 힘입은 바 무척 크다. 최남선의 번역은 앞으로 진학문과 장두철 그리고 김억 등이 바통을 이어받아 발전시킨다. 20세기 초엽 동아시아의 근대를 흔히 ‘번역한 근대’라고 일컫는다. 그렇다면 한국의 근대 문학은 가히 ‘번역한 근대 문학’이라고 할 수 있다.
Descriptive rather than analytic in its approach, this article attempts to examine some major translations of Western literary works into Korean by Nam-sun Choi, suggesting that he made significant contributions to modern Korean cultural movements in general and modern Korean literature in particular. Immediately after he had returned from Japan, Choi published in such magazines as Sonyeon (Boys) and Cheongchoon (Youth) his own translations of Western literary works written in English, French, and German, Spain, and Russian. His translated literary works include not only poems written by Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, George Byron and Alfred Tennyson, but also short stories and novels written by Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe, Leo Tolstoy, Victor Hugo, Miguel de Cervantes, etc. Since he did not have a good command of foreign languages except Japanese and Chinese, Nam-sun Choi retranslated mainly from Japanese translations. His methods of retranslations range widely from mere adaptations to selected, abridged, or partial translations. This article further argues that Choi as a literary artist was not a little influenced by his own translations of Western literary works as well as the translations by other translators.
