한국 저널리즘이 주로 보도하는 ‘자살’사건은 연예인의 자살이다. 이들은 대부분 무책임하고 왜곡되었고 음모론적이다. 이들은 인권과 생명을 무시하곤 한다. 음모론적이란 사디즘 같은 변태심리가 있다는 의미에서 이다. 저널리즘의 보도는 자살 행위를 부추기고 있다고 비판되고 있다. 저널리즘의 자살 보도는 윤리적 규범을 철저히 지켜야 한다. 그러나 나는 좀 더 적극적인 처방이 필요하다고 주장한다. 다시 말하면 저널리즘이 자살 사건을 보도할 때 엄격하게 선별해야 한다는 것이다. 가급적 자살 사건은 기사에서 빼버리거나 부득이 보도하더라도 축소하는 것이 바람직하다. 저널리즘의 보도할 만한 가치가 있는 자살 사건은 대중의 인기나 관심이 아니라 도덕적 자기희생 차원의 자살 사건이라고 이글은 주장한다.

This article concerns the subject of journalism's coverage of suicides. Korean journalism -television and the press- has covered suicides as one of the most frequently covered topics. Especially in case of television and movie stars' suicides, most of journalism media has covered them despite heavy criticisms of triggering the young and vulnerable ones to commit suicides. Reports of suicides should be very selective and ethical so as not to provide potential dangers to these at-risk group. This article, in this sense, argues journalism should either be selective or rule out suicide reports. Suicides that are worthy of media coverage should not concern the popularity and interest of people but should be limited to moral ones of self-sacrifice.
