역사적으로 가톨릭교회는 늘 선교를 통하여 복음의 진리를 전파하고 자신의 신앙을 수호하기 위하여 전력을 기울이고 있다 이러한 목적과 취지에서 역대 교황들은 교회의 가르침과 회칙들을 발표해 왔다. 현 교황베네딕토 세도 선임 교황들의 전통을 계승하여 인간 존엄성 인권 교회의 자유 신앙의 진리를 국가법적으로 보장받기 위하여 노력한다. 현 교황은 현대 문화의 위기를 초래한 진보신앙 무신론 실증주의 공리주의 상대주의 등에 대하여 날카롭게 비판하고 이러한 사상들에 맞서 그리스도교 신앙의 중요성을 강조한다. 그는 그리스도교 신앙을 위협하는 현대 문화에 과감하게 대응하는 자세로 진리의 의미와 중요함을 역설한다. 여기에서 진리는 그리스도교 계시의 진리와 예수님의 가르침을 비롯한 모든 정통교리를 뜻한다. 신앙과 관련된 모든 사안에서는 어디까지나 진리가 중심이고 척도가 되어야 한다 따라서 올바른 실천은 올바른 신앙에 따라야 한다.

Histarically, Catholic churches have spread the truth of the Gospel through missionary work, and have done their best to preserve and promote the faith. It was these aims in mind that successive Popes have pronounced on the teachings and the encyclical letters. The current Pope Benedict XVI, has continued the tradition of promoting the faith of church, with an emphasis on human dignity, human rights, freedom of church and the truth of Christian faith to secure them by State law. Pope Benedict XVI is shaiply critical of the faith of progress, athasm, positivism, utilitarianism, and relativism wbich have contributed to the crisis of modern civi]ization. Kfe has en^jhasized the irrpcrtarice of Christian faith in the face of these influences. Hfe insists on the meaning and inportance of 'truth' with a deterrninatiori to confroiit the modern culture 'wiiich threatens Christian belief. Here, the truth means the truth in the Qnistian revelation and all the orthodox teachings including those of Jesus. In all the agendas related to the faith, the truth is at the centre and should be taken as the standard Therefore, 'orthopraxis' has to follow ‘orthodoxy’.
