‘Nostra Aetate’

반포된 지 이미 40 여년 이상 된 공의회 문헌 중에서 가장 작은 문헌인 Nostra Aetate는 교회와 타종교의 관계를 주제로 한 선언이었다. 비록 이 문헌은 그토록 오래되었지만 오늘날 다양한 문화와 종교의 급격한 교류를 체험하고 있는 가톨릭교회의 신앙인들 및 그 밖의 다른 종파의 신앙인들 그리고 타종교의 신앙인들에게 어떠한 가르침 또는 지침을 주고 있을 것이라고 사료된다. 물론 이 문헌은 모든 종교들에 대하여 언급하지 못한 그 나름대로의 한계성을 지니고 있지만 종교들 간의 대화를 위한 가톨릭교회의 기본 입장을 역사상 처음으로 공식적으로 천명하고 있다는 데에 그 중요성이 있다고 하겠다. 비록 잊어진듯한 인상이 있지만 이 문헌의 유효성은 오늘날에도 지속되고 있다. 이 문헌은 종교 간의 대화를 위한 결론 및 완성을 목적하지 않았다. 오히려 Nostra Aaetate는 제종교간의 대화를 위하여 가장 기본적인 출발점이 어디인지를 보여주고 있는 것이다. 가톨릭교회는 타종교에 대한 배타적 자세를 버리고 개방된 입장에서 서로 간의 관계와 입장을 이해하고 수용하면서 타종교인들과 대화하기를 원한다고 이 문헌은 가르친다.

The documents of the Second Vatican Council were promulgated more than forty years ago. One of the smallest document called 'Nostra Aetate' was a declaration about the relationship between Catholic Church and the religions. Even though this declaration was made in the past time it is still valid as a good orientation for our time especially not only for catholic believers but also protestants and the people who belong to the various religions where the cultural and religious exchanges are so quick and speedy that sometimes nobody knows where to go in this situation. ‘NostraAetate’ has a certain limitation that it does not mention about every religion. It has, nevertheless, still a historical meaning that it declares about the religions officially for the first time in the history of Catholic Church. The declaration seems to be buried in oblivion in mean time. 'Nostra Aetate' does not have any aim to make a final conclusion and solution in the field of interreligious dialogue. It rather wants to show where the base line is for the beginning of having dialogue with another. The document teaches us that Catholic Church overcomes the exclusive position and the Church wants to understand the other religions and to cooperate each other.
