청동기시대 전기의 농경방식 재조명

Reconsidering Early Bronze Age Farming Strategies:A Critical Examination of Slash-and-Burn Farming

본고는 한국 청동기시대 전기의 농경방식에 대해 재조명을 목적으로 작성되었다. 우선 이시기의 주된 농업전략으로 상정되어 온 화전농경의 실시 여부를 평가하기 위해 화전농경의 개념적 측면을 검토하였고, 민족지적 사례들을 중심으로 화전농경의 다양한 운용방식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 화전농경이 기존의 통념과 달리 대단히 넓은 범주의 개념임이 밝혀졌고, 또한 화전농경과 함께 나타나는 거주 전략의 다양성이 강조되었다. 이를 통해 화전농경에 대한 한국 고고학의 기존의 인식이 재고되어야 함을 주장했고, 농경과 관련된 직접적 증거가 부족한 상황에서 취락 패턴 분석에 주로 의존하여 이 시기의 화전농경 가능성을 상정하는 경향에 대해 비판적으로 평가하였다. 이와 더불어 선사시대 농업전략의 구체적인 양상을 규명하는데 사용될 수 있는 분석적 접근들(예를 들어, 경작지 조성 증거 분석, 경작 증거 분석, 삼림의 제거 및 재생 증거 분석, 그리고 취락 관련 증거 분석)을 검토함으로써 전기 청동기시대 농경방식에 대한 새로운 연구 방향을 모색하였다.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the nature of farming in the Korean Bronze Age. In order to examine whether slash-and-burn farming, generally regarded as the main farming method of this period, was indeed practiced, a detailed and unbiased definition of this strategy was provided, and its actual practices were considered through ethnographic case studies. As a result, it was revealed that 'slash-and-burn farming' is a broad concept which comprises a diverse range of practices, in particular relating to modes of settlement. Thus, it was argued that the understanding of slash-and-burn farming present within Korean archaeology was too narrow and that settlement patterns could not be used as a valid means of interpreting the presence or absence of this strategy. In addition, this paper presents a series of interpretative methods which may be used to study evidence relating to the creation of agricultural fields, farming practices, and the cutting and regeneration of forests. Through this, new and alternative ways of approaching the issue of Early Bronze Age farming strategies is suggested.
