Parenting & Young Children's Problem Behaviors According to Mother's Self-Differentiation

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of parenting and young children's behaviors according to mother's self-differentiation level. Subjects of this study were 244 mothers having 3 to 5 year-old young children drawn from four preschools in Cheongju city. The pilot study was done to investigate the applicability of survey instruments. Data were analyzed by the frequency, percentage, Cronbach α, t-test, and ANOVA with Duncan post-hoc test using SPSS program. The results of this study were as follows. First, mother's parenting behaviors which composed of affective and controlling parenting behaviors were different according to mother's self-differentiation level with family of origin. A mother having high or average self-differentiation level with family of origin showed more affective parenting behaviors than mother having low one. Second, there was only a differences in affective parenting behaviors associated with mother's self-differentiation level of marital relationship. A mother whose self-differentiation level was stable with husband was more likely to show affective parenting behaviors than a mother whose one was low or average. Third, young children's externalizing problem behaviors were varied while their internalizing problem behaviors were not different according to mother's self-differentiation level with family of origin. Forth, in both young children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors, there were significant differences according to mother's self-differentiation level of marital relationship.
