A study on Macedonski's Serial Poems

At the end of the 19th century, the Romanian literature has a considerable influence on the evolution, expansion of poetic categories and the prosperity of posterior generation in Romanian poetic literature. Romanian symbolism is introduced for the first time by Alexandru Macedonski (1854-1920) through his literary magazine Literatorul (Literary man, 1880). He cultivates and develops symbolistic theory and practice it in his theoretic works as About logics of poetry (1880), Art of poems (1881), Future poetry (1892) and invents new theory named ‘Instrumental symbolism’ or ‘Instrumentalism’ which emphasize the point of musicality and role of poetic image. The aim of this study is to analyze Macedonski's collection of poems. This work is divided mainly into two collections of poems, according to the major themes and subjects : Ciclul nopţilor (Series of Nights) and Poema rondelurilor (Poems of Rondel, 1920). Macedonski's first collection of poems Ciclul nopţilor (Series of Nights) is one of the famous works written between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Ciclul nopţilor (Series of Nights) is not a volume and every poem from it consists in his varied volumes of poems. In the Ciclul nopţilor (Series of Nights) were the inner universe of poet, the negation of world filled with malicious intension, poet's death and his burial, post's spirit and destiny, the hope of death and endless beauty etc. The Rondels, written in the end of his life, showed us the series of fixed form of symbolical verse as good example of ideal standard including aspects of whole elements of symbolism. Main themes like nature, urban world, life, time, materials appear in the Poema rondelurilor (Poems of Rondel). This volume of poems consists of six parts, according to the various subjects : Rondelurile pribege (Rondels of carelessness : this describes artist's pain and ideal condition and reflects recollection of glad childhood), Rondelurile celor patru vânturi (Rondels for the four kinds of wind : this sings the happiness of nature, being born again all beings of nature), Rondelurile rozelor (Rondels of roses), Rondelurile rozelor de azi şi de ieri (Rondels for the roses of yesterday and today : nature and human's spirit communicate in the world of fairy tales), Rondelurile Senei (Rondels of Seine : this is occupied by the atmosphere of the hell and the social calamity), Rondelurile de porţelan (Rondels of porcelain : the other world as in the exotic prospect, porcelain dishes and pictures appears in this part). Through the Ciclul nopţilor (Series of Nights) and Poema rondelurilor (Poems of Rondel), Macedonski could succeed in proving his poetic thought and capacity and reflect application, development, magnification of symbolical themes. Art of symbolical poetry, themes and symbolic aesthetics, which were unfolded by Macednoski, affected the evolution and expansion of poetic categories and prosperity of posterior generation in Romanian poetic literature.
