In 1999 we celebrated the 200th anniversary of Pushkin's birthday. On that year we also celebrated the 100th anniversary of Navokov's birthday. The existence of two writers serves at one of the main claims that Russian literature has an important role in the world literature. That's why even today, many Russian writers are trying to keep literal inheritances left by them and many works are dedicated to these writers. Pushkin House written by Andrei Bitov is obviously one of those outstanding works among the Russian modern novels. The title itself already shows that the author intends to deal with many things related to Pushkin. In Pushkin House Bitov is trying to reconsider the Russian literature by associating his work with several ideas. It is well known that this novel was based on the Gift written by Nabokov. Here we see that Bitov is trying to find and determine the identity of Russian literature and culture, too. Tracing the works of Pushkin and Nabokov, Bitov is achieving his goal. The key point of this article begins with the fact that Pushkin House is written on the same ground as other works which were found in the history of Russian literature. Here we discuss the character and writing skills of Bitov.First of all, we mention that Lyova, the hero of Pushkin House, has many thing in common with two Evgenys appeared in Pushkin's novels (one in Evgeny Onegin, the other in Bronze Horseman). We also find the similarity of Lyova with Fyodor in Gift. Lyova is similar to Pushkin's hero who characteristics of superflousman, who can not be accustomed to a society. Through the character of Lyova we can watch that Pushkin's Evgeny in Bronze Horseman and Evgeny Onegin is being born again after many generations: The first one was absolutely unsatisfied with a society and a ruling power. Therefore he was living as a small man, being sacrificed by the ruling power. The latter one also couldn't get used to a high society and lived doing nothing. Through Lyova writing dissertation we can find the feature of Fyodor who felt limit but trying to overcome the difficulty in his writing novel. Now we can also compare the writing skills of Bitov with Pushkin and Nabokov. Observing hero the narrator in Evgeny Onegin sometimes is being fused with Evgeny as one unit, or sometimes being separated from him. Writing technique is repeated in Pushkin House as well. It reflect the common of hero in Pushkin and Bitov. Nabokov, as a representative of modernism, used various experimental methods when he wrote the novel Gift. In this regard we assert that the general structure of Pushkin House has the common aspect with Fyodor's writing process and with the cyclic structure of his re-birth. By these factors we can say that in Pushkin House the characters and the writing skills, shown by Pushikin and Nabokov, are sometimes being thoroughly repeated and sometimes being alternated a little. In conclusion, we can say that Pushkin House is one of those examples, proving that the tradition of Russian literature is still remaining alive and moving forward in history. In other words, we can insist that works written by Pushkin, Nabokov and Bitov show us the way to find an identity of Russian literature. By tracing their works we can prove the eternity of tradition of Russian literature.
