Every language has its own verbal etiquette, which has both language-universal and language-specific features. The verbal etiquette of the standard Serbian language is expressed mainly by means of 'address', 'appellation' and 'greetings'. The typical way of the speaker's addressing his addressee in Serbian is conveyed by the choice of the second person pronouns 'ti' i 'vi'. The choice is affected by various sociolinguistic factors, among others, 'age', 'blood and marriage relations', 'acquaintance', and 'social status' of the speaker and addressee in a given verbal interaction. The means of appellation and greetings are in turn indivisibly connected with address. In this paper verbal etiquette specific to the standard Serbian language is examined through the analytic survey on the typical patterns of address and appellation.
