Despite of a claim that grammatical gender is a inherent property of every noun, the gender of personal nouns can vary depending on particular occasions of utterance. In Slavic languages, personal nouns, which are morphologically regarded as being of masculine gender, show different behaviors in their gender agreement. Rothstein shows that this is mainly ascribed to the degree of their unmarkedness. The latter, in turn, is affected by extralinguistic factors(sociocultural characteristics of a given linguistic community) as well as linguistic (morphologic and semantic) factors and it is natural that the hierarchy of unmarkedness degree is language-specific. This article firstly gives an analytic overview of the gender assignment of Serbian personal nouns. And then it makes an author's own list of their unmarkedness hierarchy which is expected to be served as a classificatory criterion for the different behaviors of syntactic anaphoric words such as adjectival modifiers, predicates, relative pronouns and personal pronouns in gender agreement.
