A Study on the Current Language Situation of Burgenland Croatian

부르겐란트(Burgenland)는 오스트리아 동부에 위치한 9번째 주 (州)로 면적은 3,966㎢, 인구는 27만 8600명(2001년 기준)인 지역이 다. 단일 민족국가인 오스트리아에서 유일하게 대규모 소수민족들이 거주하고 있는 주이다. 역사적으로는 제1차 세계대전까지 헝가리에 속 해 있다가 1921년 오스트리아에 편입된 땅이다. 500년 전 크로아티아 인은 오스만 터키의 침략을 피해 부르겐란트 지역으로 이주해 왔으며 이곳에서 소수민족으로 자신들의 언어와 문화를 유지하고 있다. 이주 지역에 따라 4개의 방언군(群)으로 분류되는 부르겐란트 크로 아티아어는 본토 크로아티아어와는 독립된 어문전통과 표준화 역사를 가지고 있다. 현대 부르겐란트 크로아티아어는 차방언(čakavski)을 기 반으로 하고 있고 주변 언어인 독일어과 헝가리어의 영향으로 신슈토 방언(novoštokavski)을 기반으로 하고 있는 현대 크로아티아어와는 많은 언어적 차이점을 가지고 있다. 본토와 떨어진 ‘언어 섬(language island)’을 탈피하기위해 지속적으로 본토 크로아티아 표준어를 도입 하려는 노력이 있었으나 내부적인 갈등으로 두 언어의 차이는 쉽게 좁 혀지지 않았다. 최근 들어 현대 크로아티아어 정서법과 문법을 기반으 로한 사전과 문법이 간행되며 부르겐란트 크로아티아는 새로운 언어 상황을 맞이하게 된다.

This paper take a approach on the current language situation of Burgenland Croatian. The Croats of the former Western Hungarian lands originate mostly from the 16th century. Their present number is approximately 20000 in Austria, and even smaller in Hungary and Slovakia. The Croats in Austria are bi-lingual, Croatian and German. Their literary language is a Čakavian, ikavian-ekavian variety of Croatian, which has been written since the 17th century. Efforts to standardize the language have resulted in dictionaries and a grammar recently. Language contacts between Burgenland Croatian on the one hand, and Standard Croatian, German, and Hungarian on the other are described. Language policy is not very much in favour of the Croats. Nevertheless have they achieved better presence in the mass media during the last years. The linguistic usage of bi-lingual individuals differs according to age, sex, and profession. Bi-lingual instruction is conducted in a small number of schools only. But there is for the future protection of the Burgeland Croatian is much positive factors more than contradictory factors. Therefore a careful optimism is appropriate in the Burgenland for the continued existence of the minority-languages.
