Although the efficiency of individual vessels is good, emissions from world shipping are inσeasing rapidly, due to the great volume of freight. Measures are needed to address this problem quickly. That is, freight volumes of international shipping are the main artery of the world economy, constituting a very large percentage, but huge numbers of emissions of CO₂ from the vessels can not be ignored. Under such situations, amendments to the MARPOL Convention to prevent pollution during ship-ta-ship oil transfer operations were adopted by the MEPE of the IMO in its 59th session, at the IMO Headquarters in London. MEPE of the IMO agreed to disseminate a package of interim and voluntary technical and operational measures to reduce GAS emissions from international shipping, but excepted from discussions the economic measures of the emissions trading scheme, etc. this study aims to analyse economic measures to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping, and suggest future prospects to reduce CO₂ emissions.
