Merge and Move in the expletive There constructions

The goal of this article is to investigate Chomsky's (1998, 2001) claim that Merge is preferred over Move both conceptually and empirically and his feature-checking motivation in successive-cyclic movement. However, contrary to Chomsky's claim, Shima(2000) proposes that Move is selected over Merge in both conceptual and empirical respects and Bosˇkovic´(2007) suggests that there is no feature checking in intermediate positions of successive-cyclic movement. In this article, following and revising Shima's(2007) and Bosˇkovic´'s(2007) analyses, I try to propose a revised analysis on the expletive There constructions in English. Put it briefly, the expletive There has a Nominative Case and is introduced into a derivation for the Nominative Case checking. And There has a clitic property, so that it must be generated only in the presence of the indefinite NP associate. And it is also verified that There should be generated in the surface position not by Move, but by Merge. The indefinite NP as an associate could bear Partitive Case only when the expletive There included in the numeration set is generated in the surface position. In case the expletive There is not included in the numeration set, the associate could not be assigned Partitive Case. In that case, the associate should move to the position where a structural Case could be checked.
