Polish Literature After 1989

1989년 베를린 장벽의 붕괴로 상징되는 사회주의 체제의 전환이 폴란드 문학에 전환점을 마련한지도 20년이 지났다. 사회의 변화, 자유화의 바람이 문화 전반에 끼쳤던 영향력은 막대하였으며, 폴란드 문학에도 주제와 형식 모두에서 새로운 시도들이 나타났다.경제적 사유화와 함께 개인의 정체성에 대한 탐구와 사적 경험의 문학화는 뚜렷해졌으며, 지금까지 금기시되었던 여러 주제들 역시 거리낌 없이 대중에게 드러났다. 중앙의 통제력이 약해지며 지방색이 강한 ‘뿌리문학’이 대두되기도 했다. 형식적인 면에서는 문학이 여러 대중매체와 섞이는 양상을 보여주며, 소설에서는 개인적 경험과 자전적 요소가 강하게 드러나 장르적 경계가 흐릿해지기도 하였다. 산문성과 입말의 중요성을 강조했던 비트 제너레이션의 영향력이 뒤늦게 체제 전환기 시인들의 작품에서 나타나기도 했다. 이러한 모든 변화들은 무엇보다 폴란드 문학이 험난한 과거사를 통해 스스로에게 지워왔던 낭만주의적이고 애국주의적인 짐을 벗고, 문학가가 민족의 운명을 이끄는 선지자로서의 역할을 탈피하면서 시작되었던 것이다. 비록 급작스러운 상업화와 문학이 가져왔던 사회적 의미의 축소가 걱정스럽기는 하여도, 이러한 활발한 작가들의 실험은 앞으로의 폴란드 문학이 더욱더 자유롭고 현대성을 지닌 예술로서 발전할 것이라는 기대를 품게 한다.

20 years have passed, since the great transformation symbolized by the fall of Berlin Wall, provided a crucial turning point in Polish literature. Sociological changes and overall atmosphere of liberty generally influenced all aspects of cultures, thus literature. Focusing on self-identity is one of the most important trends in these time. Privatization, not only in economy but also in literature was a heated theme. Individuality was launched in the form of various autobiographical proses, which inevitably merged into novels. The boundary between fiction and non-fiction was much blurred, making some new phrase like 'artistic prose'. One of the formal novelties of these time is blending of various cultural genres with the literature itself, much encouraged by the younger writers. In poetry, influence of Frank O'hara and John Ashbery - the Beat Generation was manifested. What brought out those changes were specific Polish situation, where the role of the writers historically were not just an artist but a visionary, who would serve for the striving people. Finally unburdened by the great transformation after the fall of socialism, Polish literature has come to meet the challenges of contemporariness, free of old nationalistic and romantic responsibility. It is true, that there exist certain concerns on rapid commercialization of recent Polish literature. Still, all those active literary experiments done in 20 years bring hope to free and artistic future of contemporary Polish writings.
