A Funeral ceremony, a rite performed with respect to a dead person, is an act of endowing the death of a man with social and cultural meaning. The unique features of a Korean funeral are summarized by the custom of burying the living with the dead as attendants for their dead lord based on the understanding that the life of the present age continues even after death, reverence, and the thought of worshiping ancestors based on the consciousness of a family community. The Korean culture and thoughts having this ideological background are affected by the Confucianism immensely. After the introduction of a book Family Formalities Taught by Zhu Xi from China, the teachings of the book have been succeeded until today as Korean customs despite the long periodic changes the country has gone through.
