A Study on the Identity of the ‘Bosnian Language’

사회주의 유고슬라비아 연방(이하 구유고연방)의 붕괴는 이 지역의 정치적, 사회적 변화뿐만 아니라 언어상황에도 새로운 변화를 초래했다. 구유고연방의 최대 공용어였던 ‘세르보크로아티아어’ 가 사라진 이후 연방의 개별 공화국들은 자신들의 지역 방언에 기초한 새로운 민족어 확립을 위한 언어정책과 언어개혁에 착수한다. 이들이 목표로 하는 것은 언어적 차별화를 통해 각자의 민족적 정체성을 찾고자하는 것이었다. 연방해체이후 보스니아의 무슬림들은 자신들의 언어적 정체성이 곧 민족적 정체성과 동일시되는 정치적 상황이 발생하자 가장 적극적인 민족주의 언어정책을 실시하였고, 현재 18세기 이후 사라졌던 ‘보스니아어’라는 명칭을 다시 부활시키는데 성공하였다. 1995년 데이턴 협정으로 보스니아 무슬림은 국제적으로 하나의 민족으로 인정받게 된다. 그리고 보스니아 무슬림의 민족적 정체성이 국제적으로 인정된다 는 전제하에 ‘보스니아어’는 이들이 사용하는 민족어이며 공용어이다. 그러나 세르비아나 크로아티아어 언어학계는 ‘보스니아어’라는 용어 자체를 공식적으로 인정하지 않는다. ‘보스니아인’이나 ‘보스니아어’에 대한 논쟁은 두 용어에 대한 서로 다른 해석으로부터 기인한다고 볼 수 있다. 이런 배경에서 이 연구는 보스니아어의 정체성 문제를 통시적으로는 보스니아어의 역사적 기원으로부터 출발하여 현재의 언어상황까지 분석하고 공시적으로는 현재 보스니아어가 지니고 있는 세르비아어와 크로아티아어와의 차이점을 객관적으로 평가해 보는데 그 목적이 있다.

The aim of this article is to describe some of the debate on the Identity of ‘the bosnian language(bosanski jezik)’. The language situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is more complex than that of the rest of former Serbo-Croation/Croat-Serbian linguistic community. The language in itself is the least cause of such a state. Now the term Bosnian language is officially used, although Serbs and Croats claim that there is no such thing as a ‘Bosnian language’. Confusion comes from different interpretations of the notion ‘Bosnian’ and ‘Bosnian language’. Two basic ambiguities have been present during the discussion. Is ‘Bosnia’ just another name for the linguistic entity which has traditionally been called ‘Serbocroatian’, or is there a difference, in substance, making it a specific standard language? If it is considered a specific standard language, is it the language of the whole population of Bosnia and Herzegovina or just of the Bosniaks(Bosnian Muslims). In the article is treated this question form two aspects: diachrony(lingustic development and literary tradition) and synchrony(today's standard language). In conclusion can be answered positively in the sense that the process of standardization of bosnian language is still going on. Language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina will depend on political development. If the political division of Bosnia and Herzegonia continues, there will be a linguistic division as well.
