<미망인들>(Wdowy)은 ‘20세기를 대표하는 위대한 드라마 작가’이자 ‘폴란드 드라마의 아버지’라 불리는 스와보미르 므로젝이 1992년에 발표한 단막극으로써, 아직까지 한국에 소개되지 않은 작품이다. 1992년 12월 바르샤바의 ‘현대 극단(Teatr Wsp&oacute;łczesny)’이 초연한 이래 크라쿠프(Krak&oacute;w), 비아위스톡(Białystok) 등지에서 공연되며 관객들로부터 뜨거운 호응을 받았다. <미망인들>은 익명의 도시에 위치한 카페를 중심으로 펼쳐지는 두 개의 에피소드로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째 에피소드는 남편을 잃은 두 명의 미망인들이 카페에서 우연히 만나 서로 대화를 나누던 중, 각각 상대방의 남편이 자신의 숨겨둔 애인이었음을 깨닫게 된다는 내용이다. 두 번째 에피소드는 역시 우연히 카페에서 마주친 두 명의 남자가 ‘가운데 테이블’과 그 자리에 앉은 ‘치명적으로 아름다운 여인’을 차지하려고 다투다가 어이없는 종말을 맞는 과정을 묘사하고 있다. 언뜻 보기에 서로 연관성이 없어 보이는 두 개의 에피소드는 공통적으로 등장하는 웨이터와 미망인 3이 연결고리의 역할을 함으로 써 ‘하나의 이야기’라는 틀 속에 유기적으로 결합되어진다. <미망 인들>은 인물과 사건, 대사에만 집중하는 것이 아니라 관객과의 ‘시각적 소통’과 ’입체적 구성‘을 강조한 작품이라는 점에서 새로운 시도로 평가받는 작품이다. 므로젝은 다음과 같은 세 가지 모티브 - 1. 대칭구도(Symmetry), 2. 팜므 파탈(Femme fatale), 3. 죽음의 춤(Dance macabre) 등을 통해 우리가 사는 파편화된 세상의 단면을 생생하게 그려내는 동시에 죽음의 본질에 대한 심도 깊은 고찰을 시도하고 있다.

<Widows> is a one-act play staged in 1992 by Sławomir Mrozek, who is called ‘a great dramatist of the 20th century’ and ‘the father of Polish drama,’ but is not yet introduced in Korea. Since its first stage by ‘Teatr Wsp&oacute;łczesny’ of Warsaw in December of 1992, it was performed in Krak&oacute;w and Białystok earning grand applauses from the audience. <Widows> is made up of 2 episodes taking place in a cafe of an unnamed city. In the first episode, while two widows who lost their husbands engage in a conversation when they meet in a cafe by chance, each find out that the other woman's husband was their secret lover. The second episode, which also takes place in a cafe, is a description of how two men meet by chance and both fight to sit at the ‘center table’ and to win the heart of the ‘fatally beautiful woman’ seated there, but end up with outrageous results. The two episodes, which seem unrelated to each other, are connected by a waiter and a third widow who appear in both episodes, and are combined effectively into the framework of ‘one story.’ <Widows> is a drama commended for new attempts in the fact that it not only focuses on character, event, or dialogue, but also emphasizes ‘visual communication’realistic piece of the fragmented world in which we live and endeavors an in-depth examination of the essence of death through the three following motifs - 1. Symmetry, 2. Femme fatale, 3. Dance macabre.
