Ideographisation of the Polish writing system and the historical linguistic interpretation, i.e. what we know about the old Polish spelling system The author of this article, employing graphophonemic methods, analyses the problem of ideographisation of Polish alphabetic writing, i.e. breach or violation of the interdependence between the phonic code and the graphic code typical of this type of writing, and its influence on the type of conclusions drawn about the phonetic processes and the phonological system of the Polish language of old time. Difficulties in the interpretation of linguistic facts stemming from ideographisation are presented using the example of graphic realisation of closed vowels in Polish early printed texts dating from the beginning of the 16th century. In the process of reconstruction of the old convention determining the reference of ideographic allographs in relation to graphemes, a number of factors need to be taken into consideration, including the influence of foreign spelling paradigms, references to the indigenous spelling tradition, technical and economic conditions. It must also be stressed thatstatistical methods prove useful in analyses of the graphic plane of old texts.
