‘프라하 언어학파의 기능주의’에 대한 연구

Study of “Functionalism of Prague Linguistic School -On Language Internal Functions and Functions of Standard Language-

‘기능(function)’, ‘기능적(functional)’ 그리고 ‘기능주의(Functionalism)’라는 용어는 그 시작부터 분명히 프라하 구조주의 언어학의 특징을 잘 보여주는 용어들이다. 그리고 이 용어의 근본적인 개념은 철학적 ‘목적론(teleology)’을 그 이론적 배경으로 삼고 있는 것으로 잘 알려져 있다. 그러나 오늘날 대부분의 언어학자들은 ‘기능’이 지닌 본래의 언어학적 의미는 간과한 채 단순히 용어사용의 관습을 쫒고있다. 이와 같은 시점에서 본 연구는 프라하 언어학파의 ‘기능주의’의 뿌리를 그 이론적 배경에서부터 고찰해 보고, 목적론에 기초한 ‘기능’이라는 개념이 음운론과 통사론이라는 언어층위와 어떤 관계를 구성하는 가를 논의해 볼 것이다. 특히 음소가 지닌 변별기능을 화자와 청자간의 의사소통이라는 차원에서 접근하여, 언어 내적단위로서의 기능과 실제의 발화상황에서의 기능 사이에 일정한 차이가 있음을 살펴 볼 것이며 또한 프라하학파에서 발전되어 온 문장 억양론에 대해서도 논의할 것이다. 마지막으로 언어외적 기능에 해당하는 표준어의 기능을 언어문화라는 사회언어학적 관점에서 고찰하고자 한다. 사실 본 논문은 프라하 언어학파의 기능주의에 대한 언어사적 접근의 성격을 지니고 있지만 일차자료에 대한 접근상의 어려움으로 인해 다양한 논의를 펼치지 못한 아쉬움을 남기고 있다. 이러한 부분들은 앞으로 진행될 계획에 있는 ‘프라하 언어학파’에 대한 후속연구에서 보충되고 심화될 것으로 기대한다.

The terms ‘function’, ‘functional’ and ‘Functionalism’ show the characteristic and distinctive feature of Prague structural linguistics from its very beginning. It is well known that the fundamental concept of these expressions is based on the theoretic background of philosophical ‘teleology’. Till quite recently, however, most of linguists use them rather as a mere terminological convention, without respect to the original linguistic interpretation of Prague School. From this point of view, this paper investigates the roots of Prague School's ‘Functionalism’ from its theoretic background and discusses how the teleology-based concept of ‘function’ relates to the linguistic levels of ‘phonology’ and ‘syntax’. Finally, we survey the function of standard language which corresponds to one of the language external functions from the sociolinguistic viewpoint. In fact, this study seems to lack the various kinds of source and method to approach to a history of Prague Linguistic School, even though it tries to present that. We expect that this sort of deficiency will be eliminated in a more future, deeply involved study.
