A Study on the Origins of Serbian Names for People and Places

이 논문은 세르비아인들이 주변의 들이나 산이나 강에, 또 자신들의 아이들에게 어떤 이름을 왜 붙였는지, 또 그들의 성(姓)은 어떠한 경로를 통해 형성되어 왔는지를 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 다시 말해서 세르비아의 지명과 세르비아인들의 이름과 성의 의미를 고찰하고 세르비아인들의 이름 문화 속에 담겨져 있는 민속 문화적 요소들을 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 이 논문에서는 어원적 의미 분석을 통하여 세르비아의 지명과 인명(성과 이름)의 유래를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 지명은 역사적 사건이나 인물의 행적을 보여주거나, 일반 민중들의 관념이나 상상력과 연관된 지명 유래설화를 가지고 있는 것들이 많은데, 유래 설화를 주제별로 예시하였다. 이름과 관련된 장에서는 세르비아인들이 선호하는 이름 속에 나타나는 세르비아인들의 가치관이나 민간 신앙적 요소를 밝혔다. 또 특정한 이름들이 유행하거나 새로운 이름들이 생겨나는 것은 세르비아 사회가 겪어온 정치적 변혁이나 사회 문화적 현상의 변화와 상관성이 있음도 밝혔다. 마지막으로 세르비아인의 성씨 제도의 형성 과정과 성의 유래를 어원적 측면과 발생적 측면으로 나누어 기술하였다.

The names of places and people from the past often times contain a mini-record of historical facts otherwise lost through time that can be revealed through the analysis of the names. This article aims to explore the various names of places and people in Serbia in order to dig out various elements of Serbian folk culture throughout history As far as the name's of people are concerned , both personal names and surnames are examined. For this purpose. the thorough etymological analysis of the names in question is carried out In the examination of the origins of place names , the thematic classification of severallegendary origins is also attempted. This attempt not only shows that legends of origin are closely connected to significant personalities and events throughout Serbian history , but also serves to reveal the traditional beliefs of ordinary people as well. In the section on personal names. four different aspects are discussed They include , the name-giving tradition , characteristics of the human value system. folk beliefs in relation to protective names and the changes in popularity of certain names through time In the section on surnames , the historical process of their formalization and consolidation in the Serbian society is examined first. Then. finally. the origins of Serbian surnames are viewed on the basis of their etymology and historical geneses.
