몰나르 페렌츠의 『팔 거리의 아이들』 분석

헝가리 문학사에서 청소년 문학의 고전이라고 할 수 있는 작품이 바로 『팔 거리의 아이들』이다. 헝가리에서는 청소년 필독서로 선정되었고， 또 대학 입학시험의 국어 문제에 모리츠 지그몬트(Morics Zsigmond)의 『잘살아라(Legy jo mindhalalig)』 와 카린티 프리제시(Karinthy Frigyes) 의『선생님 제발(Tanar ur kerem)』 이라는 작품과 이 작품이 지문으로 자주 인용되기 때문에 지금까지 40판이 나올정도로 꾸준한 인기를 유지하는 베스트셀러이기도 하다.작품에서의 시간은 20세기 초반이지만， 지금까지도 많은 독자들에게 사랑을 받는 이유는 언제 어디서나 어린이에서 어른으로 커가는 인간의 성장을 다룬 소설이기 때문이다. 즉 성장소설로 분류되는 이 작품은 팔 거리에서 모여 노는 아이들과， 식물원 거리에서 모여 노는 아이들과의 싸움과， 우정， 의리， 정신적인 고뇌와 성숙을 다루고 있다. 1907 년에 발표된 이 작품은 헝가리에서만이 아니라 전 세계적으로 큰 호응을 받았다 여러 언어로 번역되어 소개된 뒤， 여러 감독이 영화 도 만들었으며 그 가운데 파브리 졸탄 (Fabry Zoltan) 감독이 1968 년에 제작한 것이 가장 뛰어난 영화로 평가 받고 있다. 영화가 완성된 다음 해 오스카상에 최우수 외국 영화로 인정받기 시작하여 여러 상을 받았다.

Ferenc Molnar (1878-1952) was internationally acknowledged as one of the greatest playwright to come out of Hungary. His fame was all over the world at the height of his fame in the 1920s and 30s. To the his fellow Hungarians, he was regarded as an author of witty and pleasant domestic comedies. However, his novel The Paul Street Boys{ 1907) was a tragic tale about adolescence, teen-age chivalry, friendship and untimely death. It became one of the best novels in 20th century. For example, the novel was chosen as a book every student must read in Hungary. Then many producers made it movies. The best was probably Fabry Zoltan directed film in 1968. The novel tells a story about a war between two gangs of schoolboys for a piece of ground, an empty plot used as a playground, a derelict b비ding site, where they can enact their teenage daydreams about warfare, solidarity and male bonding. The locations Paul Street, the Botanical Gardens are recognizable even now Paul Street is one of the existing streets of Budapest, and the Botanical Gardens and other places are also easily identifiable. Above all, this paper studied the author and the structure of novel. Especially this paper evaluated the novel as a best Bildungsroman in the 20th century. It is not personal nostalgia that makes the book such an enjoyable read; it is an interest in psychological realism and the author’s distinct respect for his young characters that makes the story so eternally valid, regardless of time and place.
