Teaching English Pronunciation Using Internet Websites

본 연구는 중등학교 영어교육에서 인터넷 웹사이트를 활용하여 발음을 지도할 수 있는 방안을 살펴보고 적용방법을 제안하기 위하여 이루어졌다. 외국어로서 영어를 배우는 EFL 학습환경에서 중등학교 학습현장에서 학생들에게 인터넷 웹사이트는 다양하고 흥미있으면서도 정확한 음성학적 지식에 기반한 자료들을 제공해 준다. 본 논문에서는 영어 자음과 모음의 발음 원리를 동영상으로 보여주는 사이트, 단어 강세와 문장 강세와 같은 초분절적 요소들을 익혀주는 사이트, 비슷하지만 틀리기 쉬운 단어들을 모아 발음연습을 도와주는 Tongue Twist 게임, 학습자 스스로 문장을 만들어서 입력하면 음성으로 전환하여 읽어주는 Text-to-Speech 프로그램, 발음연습에 대한 질문과 대답을 공유할 수 있는 인터넷 공동체를 소개하고 있다. 멀티미디어를 활용한 영어교육이 점점 발달되고 중고등학교 학생들도 컴퓨터 앞에서 많은 시간을 보내는 것을 고려할 때, 앞으로 중등학교 영어교육에서 인터넷 매체를 활용한 방법들과 연구들이 더욱 기대된다.

This study is aimed to suggest some Internet websites which can be helpful for the pronunciation teaching in middle and high school education. This study introduces websites in five categories. Students can use video clips of movement to practice consonants and vowel sounds focusing on the phonemes, allophones including some difficult pronunciations like 'r' and 'l'. They can also practice word stress and sentence stress of English while listening to the sentences. Tongue Twist games can motivate them to practice. Text-to-Speech program facilitates student-centered education, and study community encourages students' interactions. These days, most students in middle and high school spend most of their time in front of the computer. When we utilize useful websites for English pronunciation teaching, it is expected that both teachers and students can get the benefits.
