본 연구는 개인의 행복은 물론 국가의 부강이 오직 교육에 있음을 역설하고 국가의 적극적인 정책을 호소하며 국민을 계도한 矩堂의 사상과 이념을 고찰하고 있다. 이를 통하여 그가 한국교육사에 미친 영향과 그의 교육사상이 오늘에 우리에게 시사하여 주는 사항을 규명하고 있다.
Yoo Gil Joon(1856-1914) was one of the forerunners who had greatly devoted himself to the modernization of Korean society during the enlightened period of Korea as a politician and an educator. He was one of the first Korean students in the Unites States of America and in Japan. Therefore he could be well prepared with the modern thoughts through contact with the Western civilization. In his early years, he led the policical reformation and in his later years he advocated the importance of education for people. He put the educational emphasis on its practicality His objectives of education were to inspire the national identity, to inculcate the nationalism and to improve the wealth and power of the country through the education of nationalism. Historical meaning of education could be found in the fact that his emphasis was placed on the education for women and children as well as on the voeational training. His most poplular book, "Soyugyonmoon(Observation on the Western Civilization)" was the first Korean book which was written in Korean and Chinese letters and which reveals us his enlightened thoughts.
