헤르바르트의 심리학이론과 일반교수법

J. F. Herbart’s Theory of Psychology and General Method of Instruction

본 연구는 J. F. 헤르바르트(1776-1841)의 학문적 교육학에서 교육의 수단으로서 교수가 어떻게 교육적일 수 있었는지를 탐구하는 것이다. 헤르바르트의 교육과학으로서 교육학은 윤리학과 심리학에 기초를 두고 있다. 교육과학에 대한 심리학의 적용에 있어서 교육은 교사가 예견하는 목적 개념으로 윤리학과 관련이 있고 수단의 고려로는 심리학과 관련이 있다. 헤르바르트 심리학의 기본 명제는 “표상이 정신생활의 요소”라는 것이다. 그의 심리학이론에서 표상은 관념에 대신하는 개념이고 통각은 신 관념과 구 관념의 연합과정이며, 그리고 학습과정은 암기과정이다. 헤르바르트에게는 교육의 유일한 목적은 도덕성이고 교육의 구체적인 일인 교수는 마음에 표상이나 경험을 제공하여 표상의 기초 위에서 행동에 대한 관념과 동기화를 통하여 사고권을 형성하는 것이다. 교수는 지적 교육의 방법일 뿐, 교육의 목적은 인격형성이다. 따라서 교육의 수단으로서 교수가 어떻게 교육적일 수 있었는가? 그 가능성을 헤르바르트는 ‘교육하는 교수’개념에서 찾는다. 그 교수 개념에 기초를 둔 헤르바르트의 교수의 형식단계설은 물론 암송의 기본 심리적 원리라는 것이다.

J. F. Herbart(1776-1841) has been called the founder of scientific pedagogics in the history of educational theory. He is a reader of Rousseau and a disciple of Pestalozzi. On the one hand, he rejected the former’s naturalism, protesting that it was a mere folly to leave man to nature, and on the other hand, he accept his criticism of contemporary society. He went beyond and away from Pestalozzi in his psychological concepts. But he had their belief in the function of the teacher as a guides of self-activity. As I know, Herbart’s pedagogy as a science of education is based on ethics and on psychology. In his application of psychology to the science of education, education is related to ethics by the conception of the aim which the teacher has in view, by the consideration of means it is forced back on psychology. This paper is to examine the central themes of J. F. Herbart’s theory of psychology and to inquire how it can be applied to education. He is looking for a thread in his notion of educating instruction.
