이 글은 영국의 인문주의자인 아스캄이 『스콜마스터』 1권에서 제안하는 교육개혁론을 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 우선 아스캄은 당시 학교에서 행해지던 문법과 어휘 중심의 라틴어 교수법을 비판하고, 이중번역이라는 새로운 라틴어 교수법을 제안했다. 다음으로 아스캄은 학습에 적합한 아이들의 기지가 어떤 것인지를 논했다. 그는 기민한 기지를 선호하는 관습적 사고에 반해 투박한 기지가 학습에 더 적합한 기지임을 강조했다. 계속해서 아스캄은 학습과 훈육의 문제를 다루었다. 그는 아이들이 좋은 교사의 가르침을 받으면서 즐겁게 배우고, 올바르게 행동하며, 잘못은 바로 교정할 수 있기를 희망했다. 마지막으로 아스캄은 아이들의 여가활동으로 몸을 움직이면서 할 수 있는 신체훈련을 권고했다. 하지만 그는 당시 성행하던 이탈리아 여행은 교육적으로 바람직하지 않다고 비판했다. 아스캄의 ꡔ스콜마스터ꡕ는 영어로 저술된 최초의 교육논고 중의 하나로서 학문의 언어에 무지했던 많은 ‘선량한’ 영국인들에게 아이들의 교육에 대한 유익한 정보를 제공할 수 있었다. 동시에 아스캄의 교육개혁론은 다음의 몇 가지 점에서 현대 교육에 시사하는 바가 있다. 첫 번째로 아스캄이 제안하는 이중번역은 오늘날 아이들의 언어학습에 도움이 될 수 있다. 두 번째로 아이들의 기질에 대한 논의는 교육의 가능성과 한계에 대한 논쟁을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 세 번째로 학습과 훈육에 대한 성찰은 심신의 조화로운 발달이라는 교육 본연의 목적을 상기시킨다.

This study explores Roger Ascham’s educational ideals and principles in the First Book of The Scholemaster. After a brief biographical sketch, a particular attention is paid to Ascham’s opinion concerning the bringing-up of youth that is the theme of Book One. In the opening pages Ascham argues against the harsh manner of teaching Latin in the common schools while recommending double translation as the best approach to mastering Latin. Ascham then proceeds to examine the qualities desired in the pupil and suggests hard wits, not quick wits, as the true nature for wisdom and virtue. Up to the middle of Book One Ascham discusses gentle allurements to learning and the moral discipline of young, frequently reverting to his main plea: breed up in children both love of learning and good order of living. The remainder is devoted to consider physical exercises both for war and peace and the effects of travel to Italy of which Ascham has the deep mistrust. Roger Ascham’s The Scholemaster is one of the earliest treatise on education written by the English humanists. Ascham’s educational ideals and principles are largely the same as those of all the Humanists. As an English humanist, however, Ascham is concerned with rearing an English nobility capable of assuming the wisest counselors and greatest doers in the weighty affairs of the realm. With this purpose in mind, Ascham sets the humanist theory of education for their countrymen whose learning, virtue and fortitude can serve for the kingdom wisely and justly.
