부모-유아의 책읽기와 유아의 읽기발달에 관한 고찰

본고에서는 부모와 유아의 책읽기와 유아의 읽기발달에 관계되는 문헌연구를 통하여 부모-유아간의 책읽기와 책의 유형, 유아의 연령과 읽기능력 등에 따라 어떻게 다르며, 책읽기가 유아의 읽기발달에 미치는 영향에 대하여 고찰하여 보고, 부모-유아의 책읽기의 바람직한 방향을 모색해 보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 부모와의 책읽기와 유아의 읽기발달, 책을 매개로 한 부모-유아간의 상호작용, 유아와의 책읽기 활동을 위해 고려할 점 등을 살펴보기로 한다.

Reading is a developmental task which develops gradually over time. Many factors influence children's reading ability, and reading to children is one of them. Studies suggest that reading to children is important and has significant impacts on children's development of reading. This study reviews a body of literature to look over the relationship between family storybook reading and children's reading development. Reading to children is related to children's vocabulary, language development, reading readiness, reading comprehension, understanding of story structure, and motivation to read. In addition, it is also related to understanding of many aspects of reading, such as how handle books, the directionality of written language, and the functions of print in books. Reading to children has long-term effects as well. Several factors influence parents' reading to their children. Parents regulate their reading according to their social background, types of books, age of the child, and parental beliefs. Parents' reading changes over time and their children's reading evolves accordingly. Parents' reading to their children seems to provide opportunities to teach and interact with their children in the zone of proximal development. Since many studies reveal the positive effects of reading to children, it is important to educate parents about the significance of reading to their children. Although many parents do read to their children, majority of parents still do not realize the importance of early reading experiences. Reading to children at kindergarten is also important. By reading children regularly at home and at kindergarten, both parents and teachers can help children learn to read naturally and enjoy reading throughout their lives.
