Virtual Communities and Social Capital

본 연구는 가상공동체 활동이 공동체 참여자의 사회연결망의 확대와 사회적 자본의 효과성에 미치는 영향을 검증하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 한국의 대표적인 포탈사이트인 다음(daum)과 프리챌(freechal)에서 일반직장인과 전문직 종사자들로 구성된 실무자 공동체의 구성원들을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였다. 최종적으로 수집된 94명의 자료를 분석한 결과, 활동 중인 가상공동체의 다양성, 공동체에 대한 몰입정도, 물리적 공간에서의 추가적인 접촉이 사회연결망의 확대에 정적인 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 가상공동체에 대한 몰입정도와 가상공동체 활동을 통해 회득된 사회연결망의 확대가 사회적 자본의 효과성에 정적인 영향을 미치고 있음을 발견하였다.

This study aims to test the effects of the virtual community activities on the expansion of social networks and getting job related assistance. A questionnaire was distributed to the participants of virtual communities of practices established in the daum.net and the freechal.com in December 2002. Data from 94 respondents were analyzed. Results show that (1) the diversity of virtual communities that respondent participated, (2) the degree of commitment on enrolled virtual communities, and (3) the frequencies of face to face interaction enlarge respondents' social networks. In addition, the degree of commitment and the enlargement of the social networks through virtual community activities help the respondents get job-related assistance.
