본 연구의 목적은 21세기 새로운 평생학습시대에 적합한 고등교육의 발전과제를 제시하는 것이었다. 이에 따라 우리나라 고등교육의 현황을 평생교육적 관점에서 분석하였으며, 평생학습사회 실현을 위한 고등교육의 전망을 분석하였다. 또한 선진국의 평생학습 실현을 위한 고등교육 개혁의 동향을 분석하여, 우리 고등교육에 주는 시사점을 도출해 보았다.
The purpose of the study is the development of prescriptions for the higher education process aligned with new trends of the lifelong education in the 21st century. The study reexamines the higher education process of Korea from the lifelong education perspectives along with the analysis and evaluation of various alternatives and prospects is realizing a lifelong education oriented society. A further study was made on the trends in the reformation of higher education in tune with lifelong education perspectives in the advanced countries, seeking their implications for the improvements of higher education in Korea. On the basis of these studies, following suggestions are made for the development of the higher education system which fits with lifelong education age: First, flexibility of the student recruitment process of the colleges is required so that complexity of the society and the variety of the clientele can be accommodated. Second, in order to extend opportunities for the higher education to every member of the society, access to education should be open and diversified. Third, official recognition for the variety of educational experiences should be granted so that alternative credit building practices such as credit bank system or distance education system become viable. Fourth, the governmental support, both administrative and financial, is a necessity in efficiently achieving the development of lifelong education system for higher education. For the achievement of foregoing tasks, a drastic shift of understanding and will of the society for the achievement of the lifelong education is called for. A shift from an academic credential oriented society to a substantive ability oriented society. One of the prerequisites in realizing such a shift is how to build a social system based on mutual trust, which can be most effectively attained when it is sought through educational social movements.
