The Mispronunciation of English Sounds by Korean and Japanese Speakers of English

In the process of learning a foreign language the sound system of a native language influences the pronunciation of the foreign language. In both English and Japanese consonants, voiced and voiceless sounds are classified differently from each other. Therefore Japanese speakers of English do not have much difficulty in pronouncing English voiced sounds. Koreans have difficulty in pronouncing English voiced sounds because in Korean voiced and voiceless sounds are not distinctive. In English, tense vowels and lax vowels are different pnonemes. But in Korean and Japanese they are not. These cause the same troublesome problems for both Korean and Japanese students. The other problems which Koreans and Japanese face are the syllable structures. CVC is allowed in Korean but only CV in Japanese. In the case of adding hatsuong and sokuong the syllable structure is CV plus C rather than CVC. In connection with the mora concept of Japanese, a lot of interferences of mispronunciation occur. In this paper I tried to find some pronunciation difficulties which Korean and Japanese both share. Also, I have discussed the points that Japanese find more difficult than Koreans, as well as the points that Koreans find more difficult than Japanese.
