The Role of "Sowhak" in the Education of Human Nature

본고는 첫째 초등학교에서부터 대학에 이르기까지 소학을 위시한 우리의 고전을 윤리과목으로 채택할 것을 제창한다. 둘째, 인성교육에 회초리를 이용해야 한다. 셋째, 현재의 성균관 대학을 국립대학으로하여 민족 대학의 면모를 갖추자는 것이다. 넷째, 현대 산업사회에 대한 인식이다. 다섯째, 그동안 교육부의 교육시책은 국민들의 기대에 부흥하기 보다는 오히려 우려를 더해가는 쪽으로 진행되어 왔다.

Our teenagers social acts are getting rude, selfish, impolite and crucil, since they take a hard work at school including not only social but also modern moral education. Some experts pointed out such phenomena is possibly due to the rapid industrialization and as a result to mammonism rather to a lack of lack of education. Our people had been called as Orient Morality Kingdom state that is the most moral people of others in Far East states including China. The chief reason so called was that we had "Sowhak" a custom code of moral behaviors for the teenagers but we abandon Japanese educational assimilation. European natural law thought and Foreign invasion interrupted our traditional thought and moral education coherence for about one hundred years. Now we Korean people has be come the most ugly one in the world. Industnalization could also be added to theses severe moralistic trials. Despite rapid industrialization discouraging experiences these still remain distinguished exponents of the view that man at the primitive level is innately good and that it is the social and political organization of civilized life which has introduced. The seds of violence and disorder and which in their turn have led to systems of legal coercion. Each of us knows from his own experience that his fellows are, on the whole, kindly and well-intentioned. Most of the friction and disccored of our lives are obviously the result of such exasperations and confction and disccord of our lives are obviously the result of such exasperations and conflicts as civilzation itself creates. Envy, malica and all uncharitableness usually have for the object of their expression some artificial aim, form the pursuit of which our geenagers are not exempt. I urge the only way to take up our old Orient Morality Kingdom is to take Sowhak as a moral custom code for teenager education again primary, middle and high school as one hundred years before, The contents Sowhak are so-called "Sam Kang Olyun" that is, courteous behaviour between me and king, parents, brothers, friends, superior, imperior, wife etc. The filial piety is the most highest value of these courteous behaviours. It is presented usually as "When one would he filial, one's parents are gone", or "a son is always too late to think of his parents". filial piety form old time evalued by korean mentality prevails all others spiritual values and present korean identity. This spiritual value had been of traind through old custom presented and provided by our eternal moral text "Sowhak".
