The purpose of this study is to clarify the classic Korean literary style by analyzing a few classic writers` views on it. In the first place how to understand Geon Chang Lee`s and Taek Young Kim`s is to be preceded. 1. The composition theory of Geon Chang` Lee can be divided into six phases: 1) to construct the theme and the plot; (構意) to contrast the main idea with the opposite one, 2) to adopt one`s own rhetorics, 3) Chinglyang and Bihyol (稽量比繋): to intend to square his own ideas with his expression, 4) to rhyme the rhythm of the work with ancient masterpieces, 5) to write and read . aloud the composition repeatedly, 6) to compose one`s own satisfied, iidosyэnratic style. In particular his theory ceaters on rhetorics. But he thinks that artistic precision is more important than the form and technique of rhetorics. 2. Taek Young Kim developes his composition theory into the methods such as what is called Che.Beob.Myo.Gi, (観法妙無). rationality (理順) vocal rhythm, and revision (改修). Che (體) points up the grace of seatences, Beob(法), the four steps in composition (=introduction, the development of theme, argument, and summerizing up), Myo(妙), the variation of the four steps in composition, and Gi (氣) is the vitality of esprit in composition. Among these elements his main emphasis lies pon Gi (氣) 3. Both Lee and Kim have something in common to do with each other Especially, they do not stick to formality, and, instend, persist in the necessity of originality, plainness, and reason. In this respect they can be called the classic stylists. 4. Their theories are regarded as the so-called Gwandoseol (貫道設), which is the theory of getting the. true threshold of composition They belong to Daleuipa(達意祇); namely, substance is given much more weight than formality, or style. However, while Geon Chang Lee is one of Jusapa(主氣派)s who put ,emphasis on rhetoricsc, Chang Gang Kim, one of Jugipa(主氣派)s who stresse the esprit of composition.
