The Place of Undecidability: A Geographical Understanding of a Place-Based Community in Mun-Yol Yi's Fiction

본 연구의 목적은 인간주의적 렌즈와 해체주의적 렌즈를 통해 이문열의 소설 「익명의 섬」에 존재하는 문학적 장소의 지리적 특징을 논의하고, 장소에 대한 후기구조주의적 이해 방식을 제시하는 것이다. 본 연구는 먼저 Heidegger의 ‘거주’ 개념에 기초를 둔 실존주의적 및 인간주의적 장소를 이론적으로 검토한 후, 장소에 대한 인간주의적 이해를 위해 장소의 요소와 의미의 측면에서 그리고 장소에 대한 해체주의적 이해를 위해 Derrida의 ‘대리보충’ 개념을 통해 그 소설 속 장소를 본다. 인간주의적 관점은 장소의 내부와 외부 사이의 경계와 분리를 인정하고 외부에서 내부로의 이질적인 흐름을 자기-폐쇄적인 장소의 정체성과 도덕성에 부정적인 영향을 갖는 것으로 본다. 반면, 해체주의적 관점을 통해 장소의 내부와 외부 그리고 존재의 현존과 부재 사이의 경계가 흔들리게 되는 ‘결정불가능성’의 장소를 확인할 수 있다.

This research aims discussing the geographical propel1ies ofa literary place in MlIn-Yol Yi’s fiction The Island of Anonymity through both humanistic and deconstructive lenses and to suggest a poststructuralist way of understanding places. For this, first it theoretically reviews existential or humanistic places based on Heidegger’s concept of ‘dwelling' and then examines the fictive place in terms of the elements and meanings of place for humanistic understanding of place and through Derrida’s concept of ‘ supplement’ for deconstmctive understanding of place. The humanistic lens presumes the boundaries and separation between the inside and the outside of place and regards heterogeneous flows from the outside to the inside to have negative effects on the identity and morality of the self-closed place. Meanwhile, the deconstrllctive lens discovers the place of ‘ undecidability’ where the boundaries between the inside and the outside of the place and between the presence and the absence of being are unsettled.
