Communicative language teaching has received a lot of emphasis in recent English classrooms in Korea and teachers are expected to play a critical role in implementing the communicative approach in their classrooms. This emphasis has also led to re-evaluate the current pre- and in-service teacher training programs in terms of their efficacy in meeting the challenges of communicative language classrooms. Current studies in second language teaching have reflected this trend, and have researched how teachers perceive and accommodate the changes in their classrooms. This paper attempts to provide useful insights on teacher education research by reviewing the relevant studies. For this purpose, 31 papers in four major journals were reviewed in terms of their research themes and methods. The results show that teachers’ attitudes toward the communicative language teaching and teachers’ reflection were the most frequently researched topics. The most commonly used research method was the survey suggesting the need for long-term qualitative studies to provide a more in-depth understanding and identification of issues in teacher education research. Suggestions for future research in teacher education are made based on the findings of the study.
